Yet thischaracter is still able to make a jape about his wife to show that heis not bitter. The boatman is also the first to introduce the motif ofthe river, water imagery in the play. This involves the members of theplay using the characteristics of water and portraying them into theirown lives, an example being beau monde figures as dry land.Throughout all the roles played by the Common Man, including theSteward, Boatman, Publican, Jailer, Foreman of the jury and aHeadsman, he will always extinguish a similar attitude, the attitude ofthe plain and simple man, as the jailer says. During his role as theForeman of the Jury, The Common Man seems to bring all the rolestogether I think a recite that very well sums up the Common Man is whenthe jailer says, Better living and no conscience, than dead withmorals.But I think the Common Mans close major function in the play is hispart as narrator, if it wasnt for the Common Man the falsehood would betold alone just by the characters, this could mean the story might beharder to understand as it goes along. Furthermore the story would beless interesting as well as harder to grasp. The Common Man is a veryimportant part of the play A man for all seasons.
